After many nights under the stars, would I buy it again? Absolutely.
When I started looking for a rooftop tent, I spent weeks comparing brands.
Like most people, I watched countless YouTube videos, read reviews, and probably spent more time on Reddit than I'd like to admit. Everyone seemed to have an opinion, and the choices quickly became overwhelming.
Eventually, I decided on the Thule Tepui Explorer Kukenam 3.
After camping with it across Alberta and sharing it with guests through my rooftop tent rental business, I can confidently say this:
If I had to buy another rooftop tent tomorrow, I'd buy the same one again.
That doesn't mean it's perfect.
But it does mean it's earned my trust.
First Impressions
The first thing you'll notice is that this isn't a lightweight tent.
It's heavy.
Very heavy.
Installing it for the first time definitely isn't a one-person job unless you have a ceiling hoist or some other lifting system. Even now, I use an electric hoist in my garage whenever I need to remove it.
At first I saw the weight as a disadvantage.
Now I mostly see it as a sign of how solidly it's built.
Nothing about this tent feels flimsy.
The hinges, ladder, floor, and fabric all give the impression that they're designed to last for years rather than just a few camping seasons.
Comfort
This surprised me the most.
The built-in foam mattress is genuinely comfortable.
I expected I'd eventually replace it with something thicker, but I've never really felt the need.
I've slept on plenty of air mattresses over the years, and waking up on the Kukenam has almost always been more comfortable.
After a long day of hiking, climbing into a real mattress instead of inflating an air bed is something you quickly begin to appreciate.
Setup Is Exactly Why I Bought It
One of the reasons I chose a rooftop tent was simplicity.
After a few practice runs, setup takes only a few minutes.
Open the cover.
Unfold the tent.
Extend the ladder.
You're ready.
When you're travelling through places like Banff, Jasper or Waterton and moving between campgrounds, that convenience makes a big difference.
Less time setting up.
More time exploring.
Rain? Bring It.
Before owning this tent, rain was probably my biggest concern.
Now it's one of my favourite parts of camping.
One evening, rain started shortly after we climbed inside.
At first I wondered if we'd made a mistake.
Instead, we spent the evening lying comfortably inside the tent, listening to the sound of rain falling overhead while staying completely dry.
There was no worrying about water pooling underneath us or waking up in a damp sleeping bag.
That's one of the biggest advantages of sleeping off the ground.

If you're looking for an ultralight tent that comes on and off your vehicle every few days, there are lighter options available.
But if you're looking for something dependable that feels like it'll still be working years from now, this one deserves a place on your shortlist.

Would I Recommend It?
Without hesitation.
The Thule Tepui Explorer Kukenam 3 isn't the newest rooftop tent on the market, and it certainly isn't the lightest.
What it offers instead is something I value much more.
Confidence.
Confidence that it'll handle changing weather.
Confidence that it'll be comfortable after a long day outdoors.
Confidence that when I unzip the cover at the campsite, everything will work exactly as expected.
That's exactly what I want from camping gear.
Final Thoughts
Some camping gear gets replaced every couple of years.
This isn't one of those purchases.
The Kukenam feels like something you'll own for a long time, and judging by the experiences of many other owners, that's exactly what tends to happen.
If you're looking for your first rooftop tent and you want something proven rather than trendy, I think it's an excellent choice.
It's certainly been one of the best camping purchases I've ever made.
